When four-year-old Lucas Whiteley was struggling with his science homework, he decided to enlist the help of Nasa.
The little boy from West Yorkshire was delighted to get a response to his questions, which included: How many stars are there in the sky? (Too many to count); who came second and third in the race to the Moon? (Russia and China, who have landed vehicles but not astronauts); and did any animals go to the Moon? (No).
My six-year-old son Christian is equally curious and never stops asking questions, many of which my husband and I fail to answer to his total satisfaction.
So - inspired by Lucas Whiteley - he decided to put them to the experts, and here are their written responses: Question: When will the world end?Astronomer Royal, Lord Martin Rees: In more than five billion years’ time. But the sun is getting hotter and brighter, and in a few hundred million years’ time it will become very uncomfortable to be beneath it. By then, humans may have moved to other planets. I hope so anyway — if we are less lucky, we may go the way of the dinosaurs. Unlike me, you will probably still be alive when the 22nd century begins.
