I took the grandkids and their mom to the Barnum Bailey circus in Portland last month. The circus has 4 different shows on tour, and our's was called Boom A Ring-not the Red tour or Gold or Zing Zang Zoom.
I was not happy with what I saw. The kids had fun, but I felt cheated. It was not a full fledged circus like the one I saw as a kid. Due to animal rights protests, they have cut back on the animals. There was no tigers or lions! We had a few elephants, a few camels, dogs and cats and birds, but no big growling cats.
I emailed them and asked for a refund. Who ever heard of Barnum Bailey without big cats?
I understand people being concerned about the treatment of these beautiful animals, but I really don't think this company would mistreat these very expensive investments. They are checked by inspectors at every stop. The zoo animals may have it worse. I don't really know. I'm sure they would all rather be running free on the plains of Africa, but it's also nice for kids in this country and others to get to see them up close.
I hate the way dolphins are kept in closed waters and swim in circles. So, I have mixed feelings here. I promised the kids they would see lions and tigers, and they got camels-just not the same lol-
Maybe it's time to just set them all free and at the same time end all killing of them by poachers and idiots that think tiger blood makes them great lovers, and other fables.
I just wish Barnum Bailey would have stated that in their advertising so I didn't have to lie to the kids. I guess they still have those animals at their other shows. They just don't bring them to places where they may get a negative reaction, like Portland-lol
O' by the way, if you go, eat first-a sno-cone is $10.00! Of course you do get to keep the sovernier cup. Cotton candy is a bargain, it's only $8.00-I better start saving up. I have tickets to the Disney Live show in Jan.!
