Fury as OAP's are given egg sandwiches and crisps at council Christmas dinner By Aidan McGurran 20/12/2008
Hungry OAPs who turned up for a slap-up Christmas feast were given egg sandwiches and crisps instead of turkey with all the trimmings.
The 125 guests had been nominated to attend the bash by councillors and charities but some wished they hadn’t bothered.
One moaned: “Even the decorations were sparse. In past years we’ve had a proper Christmas dinner – this year it was soup and egg sandwiches, crisps and sausage rolls.”
The budget bash was laid on by the Women’s Institute in Romford, Essex, but paid for by the council.
Another guest accused officials of slashing £10,000 off the budget. He said: “It was very depressing. It was easily the cheapest and nastiest Christmas dinner we’ve ever been to.”
But Stephen Kelly, Havering Council deputy leader, claimed old folk did not want a full Christmas dinner as it was too big for them.
He admitted the council had saved about £10,000 compared to last year’s party but refused to reveal the bill for the latest bash.
He added: “For someone to criticise this is inexcusable. It wasn’t done to save money, it was done to give a great service. That’s what Christmas is all about – charity – not how much we spend on something.”
Now let me do the math. Last year it cost the council $20,000 (converted) for 125 guests. That equates to $160 per head. Not in your wildest dreams would a dinner cost that much. Someones got their fingers in the cash box.
