Charity to receive shoes dumped on US highway
January 5, 2009 - 7:24AM
A US charity group has stepped forward to collect thousands of shoes mysteriously dumped on a Miami-area highway and will send them to the impoverished Caribbean nation of Haiti.
Soles4Souls, a Nashville, Tennessee-based charity, is sending representatives to Miami to collect the shoes. The group will distribute them to people in Haiti, according to a statement.
The Florida Highway Patrol said thousands of work boots, bath slippers, tennis sneakers, beach sandals, even pairs of inline skates, inexplicably materialised on Friday morning on the busy roadway. Traffic was disrupted for hours.
A private contractor was hired to pick up the sea of soles and deposit them in an empty field. The investigation into who discarded the shoes continues.

But I still wonder why the US ships to other needy countries in cases like this when with our economy so bad, and so many people living on the streets that they don't start giving them more of a hand. I think its time they start looking in their own backyards. We're falling apart at the seams and they keep throwing good money after bad.
