Ugly face of speed camera rage Chris Thomson January 2, 2009 The alleged offender tries to wrench the Multanova from its mounting. Police are trying to track down a man who repeatedly smashed a Multanova against a Swanbourne lamp post on December 30. Police Media's Ros Weatherall said the vandalism occurred about 4.50pm. "One of our camera operators was monitoring northbound traffic on the West Coast Highway adjacent to Swansea street in Swanbourne," Ms Weatherall said. "He's seen a man standing nearby at a bus stop paying attention to the Multanova and kept an eye on him because he appeared suspicious. "The man walked to the Multanova, disconnected the battery to the camera, before picking the Multanova up and repeatedly smashing it against the lamp post." Ms Weatherall said the man fled along West Coast Highway before running down Lynton Street. She said the Multanova was destroyed and would cost taxpayers $200,000 to replace. The man had tanned skin, was between 35 and 40 years old, was 178cm tall, of solid build, and had short shaved hair. He was wearing a white tank top and dark shorts. That will teach the buggers to stop hiding the cameras behind trees and bushes. As for the $200,000 - where the hell did they get that figure from?

Probably the cost of the whole unit including the transport vehicle and everything else each camera comes with.
Inreality probably not that much at all.
These figures are usually greatly inflated to cause rage amongst the taxpayers.
In this case few Taxpayes are enraged about speed cameras being damaged.
I have only felt that a few Red Light/ speed cameras are not revenue raisers.
There is one in Darwin which has HUGE signs coming up to it that they are at the next intersection. There has been a concerted advertising campaign that there is cameras there. There are also huge flashing Warning lights telling us that the lights are going to change.
And yet there are still hundreds of light runners and speeders through the intersection a day.
There are also numerous major accidents on that road.
