Set a broken leg Milk a cow Build a shelter Butcher a chicken Make bread from scratch (including harvesting and grinding the wheat) Make soap from homemade lye and rendered fat Can tomatoes A little too rustic for the urban types? OK, how about this. Can you:
Prepare a meal without electricity? (Can you prepare a meal at all?) Purify filthy water? Get out of a city without a car? Use a weapon for defense?
My home made bread is awful but I can make some. The whole lye and rendered soap thing is more expensive than buying soap right now. And I would hate to have to bike or walk out of a city if I didn't have to , but then again I try to stay out of cities when I can so that is not a problem for me.
The rest I can do.

Between the wife and I, we can do all those things.
When we lost our power for two weeks, you should have seen us after about the third day. We were sitting pretty.
"It took us about 3 day to get up to speed and get a routine down."

On Friday we lost power for 1 hour at work. As a group we really were floundering for several minutes. Some people actually wanted to go home for the day! Then I implemented a housekeeping program in the office - something you can do without power. Funny how people managed to cope without power until it was restored.
Cliff you have my admiration for being able to cope without power for so long. Well done.

Cliff you have my admiration for being able to cope without power for so long. Well done. It's not like we had a choice. If we did, we would have opted for power. Yeah, I'm a weenie. <grin>

I have no real problem with a power out.
There's a gas BBQ outside the backdoor, a small portable gas stove in the garage, emergency lighting in most rooms, candles in the cupboard plus a small spirit stove.
Worst comes to the worse it only takes a few moments to set a 'Blackman's Fire' on which you can do all your cooking. It wouldn't be the first time I've cooked food on a shovel of spade.

Here's a book that is a worthwhile addition for your bookcase. Lots of tips for survival in any climate and tells you how to catch food and make weapons for hunting.
