Holiday overload
June 9 is not the Queen's birthday and there is no holiday for it in Britain, so why here? This is an imposition on the business community. Several other public holidays are completely unjustified, including the August bank holiday, Labour Day in October and those added when Australia Day or Anzac Day falls on a weekend.
These unnecessary holidays have no significance in modern society - there are no celebrations in recognition of the occasion. Their abolition is long overdue.

Chance to do nothing is not a waste of time
As well as the Queen's birthday being an imposition on business (Letters, June 6), so are weekends, sick leave, maternity leave, health and safety for workers, and wages. The sooner these extra burdens are abolished, the better.

Step outside, take a walk, admire a tree, smell a flower, just take a deep breath and enjoy the great Australian notion of having a holiday for no real reason at all, Bill Alcock. The world won't stop if you do nothing constructive for a day.

Queen's birthday? Labour Day? I thought they were holidays to mark the beginning and the end of the ski season.

It's a balancing act.
So many men and women work their tails off to provide things for their famlies just to find that a little more time at home would have done the trick.
Then there are those who are at home all the time and never provide.
