Safe flights, not profits, are the bottom line
What Geoff Dixon and Co from Qantas don't seem to realise is that when I get on one of their planes, I don't really care how much profit the company makes. I don't care what returns the shareholders are getting. I don't care if Mr Dixon has kindly decided to freeze his own wage.
What I do care about is whether the plane has been serviced by well-trained, motivated and capable engineering staff, who are properly rewarded for the fine work they do, so that the plane will actually get off the ground and stay in the air. Mr Dixon may well decide to wait this one out. Meanwhile, I'll be waiting at the check-in of another airline.

Unfortunately, many airlines take the attitude ...why should we pay for safety, that's what we have insurance for. I thought though QANTAS had one of the best safety records. Paul

Qantas still does have a good record Paul but with all the overseas outsourcing its not a case of if but when a plane will fall from the sky.
Qantas is our national flag carrier and all work should be carried out in Australia.

There have been a significant increase in smaller maintenance problems being reported very similar to the failed Ansett airlines. Qantas is now regularly having tyre blowouts on landings and takeoffs some thing that use to be a rarity. There are also other issues that are happenning and all since their NEW CEO has taken over. Something is wrotten in Qantas and it is something new in the barrell.

I agree with you Chips. Outsourcing will be the end of us all. Our Air Force wants to outsouce 85% of the constuction of our new tanker to france. Paul

The reason for that Paul is because Boeing have been caught recently in several bribery scandals. Although I do believe the Aeroplanes are being built in Huntsville Alabama or at least somewhere near there b a United States company.

Components are built in france and shipped to Huntsville. We would be at the mercy of france to keep getting components and later parts to keep the tanker fleet going. The airbus plane is not at all suited to replace the -135. I would love to have seen a Lockhheed entry as I am partial to Lockeed. Tankers are more important than any other aircraft we have. The all would rely on tankers to get to their targets. Cargo planes need them. Even Navy planes need them if targets are to far inland. But I agree with you about QANTAS. They should keep there maintainence work in Austaila. Paul

Paul we had the problem in the 60s where the French wouldnt allow us to use our Mirage IIIo's in Vietnam. The same problem lies with other countries that buy US planes the US tells the buying country that you cannot use them against certain enemies and if you do no more spare parts.
Lockheed are the contracting builder in Huntsville I believe.
