Slower path more sure
While I can sympathise with Chin Jin's feelings on human rights ("No more appeasement, West must push China to democracy", May 20), his analysis of how the democratic world should react is a bit simplistic.
Democracy has to be learnt and has to grow. This always takes time. If there is any pushing to be done in the meantime it can only be by the Chinese people when they reach the conclusion that some of the less desirable features of the present regime no longer serve their best interests. I believe Kevin Rudd understands this and is well qualified to strike the right balance between tolerance and confrontation. I expect him to lead rather than push.

Dangling a carrot in the face of a stubborn mule is more likely to git it to move than standing at its rear attempting to kick it into doing what you want and kicking it may get yourself kicked by the mule just for your trouble.
