Dying with dignity
Leaving aside the current matter before the court ("Nitschke rejects suicide bias", May 20), it seems to me there is a simple and practical solution to assist those who have an overriding desire to die with more dignity and less suffering than current circumstances allow. It occurred to me during my father-in-law's prolonged suffering before his death that the likes of Dr Nitschke should establish a register of alert and able terminally ill people willing to help end the suffering of others in more advanced stages of terminal illness. In return, they would receive the same courtesy from others as their suffering reached intolerable levels. Any charges brought against those who assist others to commit suicide would be unlikely to see the light of day, as the court system would not cope with the likely volume of participants, and neither would the "criminal" live long enough to stand trial or serve time.
More than three years later, I still think about my father-in-law every day. It's a shame that most times it is about him lying in a hospital bed.

I've never been through such suffering nor have I witnessed it first hand. But I'm not comfortable helping some one commit suicide. Where I live we have doctor assisted suicide. The fedreral government stepped in and said doctors could not prescribed federally regulated drugs to someone for the purpose of commiting suicide. The state fought back in the courts spending millions of dollars doing so. The courts ruled the government doesn't have the right to regulate federally regulated drugs. So now they've made it as easy as possible for sick people to stop being a burden on family and society. No sense wasting money easing their pain when they can simply kill themselves. We have in our prisons the worst kind of scum bags. Some who've killed their own wives and children in horrible ways. They are kept on a suicide watch to STOP them from commmitting suicide. We spare no effort in making their lives comrotable and fulfilling. Someone please explain that to me. Paul

I can't Paul.
I've watched nice people die in horrible pain and it should never be allowed.
We treat our beloved pets better than we treat ourselves.
