Strike a light!
China's earthquake has officially left almost 30,000 dead, 170,000 injured and 4.8 million people homeless. Australia is reported to have pledged a paltry $1 million in aid. Just how much is spent on New Year's Day fireworks every year?

There's always an initial pledge made when disaster strikes and that amount is subsequently reviewed when the depth of the disaster is assessed.
However, our hands are tied if they won't let the aid or our rescue experts in.

Tit for tat in politics of aid
Mary Lee (Letters, May 19) raises a valid concern about aid to countries suffering from natural disasters. In the case of China, perhaps Australia should increase its aid to match the amount China will reduce on its spending on nuclear weapons, its space program and various sporting events, such as the one starting in a few months.

If China pledged $US1 million ($1.04 million) in aid to Burma, why are we giving $1 million in aid to China?
