Culture clash
Let's get something straight about human rights in China. Every citizen here has human rights. I see every day the populace going about its business without interference from the Government.
If we are law abiding the Government is benign. It appears to me that people like Michael Smith (Letters, May 9) want to defend dissidents and troublemakers.
While the Chinese population is generally supportive of the Government, I have heard many students and other people with opinions about the Government that are not the party line.
China is not like a Western country, and for Western people to demand that China do this or that displays ignorance of China and appalling bad manners.

If it seems as though they are going about their business with out government interference it's only becasuse they know what business their government allows through years of indoctrination. China is not like Western Countries, true. But if I see my neighbor beating his wife and kids do let him keep doung it just because his culture may be differnet than mine? Who am I to say that his wife doesn't enjoy being put in the hospital after bieng beaten? Maybe his daughter enjoys being rfaped by her father. red china is NOT free. The only right a red chinese citizen has is to be a slave the communist goverment. Paul

Paul are you saying that you are not a slave to the US Government?
Guess again you are as highly regulated as they are but do not realise it. True that they are subject to certain laws but so are you. You just think you are free but go ahead and proclaim that you are a Communist and see what YOUR Government does to you. As such your Government is as tolerant as the Chinese. Your Government has Political Prisoners as well what do you think Guantanamo Bay is and there are also Political Prisoners on the Mainland as well.
Does the US give comfort and aid to despotic Regimes yes and it helps keep many of them in Power and it in some cases is a despotic regime in its own right. The President himself believes he doesnt have to abide by the Constitution of the United States.
You make comment about incest well in Red China the father would be executed for that. He would be charged go through a trial and if found guilty probably executed all in a reasonably short period of time. As for wives being beaten by husbands that I believe will get the Husband several "years" of hard labour something that is a rare occurance in the United States and as for beating children you obviously are not aware of the cultural significance these days in relation to the upbringing of the "only child" not kids as you say. Chinese Parents dote on the child.
Guess what we all are slaves of the government! Try revolting against it and see where you end up! Dont pay your taxes and see where you end up Just ask Wesley Snipes! Go protest outside 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue these days see how long it is before you are arrested!
True you have religious freedom however woe and behold if that Religion isnt one that the Government thinks is OK because they refuse to allow many religions their beliefs if it goes against the Grain of Judeo Christian normalities.

Few rights left for some Writing from China, John Leon Brunton (Letters, May 10-11) makes a heartfelt plea for respect for China's human rights record, and the right of individuals to go about their daily business there. I'm sure that famous image of that man carrying the plastic bags home wouldn't haunt us so much if we felt he might be alive and well and continuing his regular carting of his shopping through Tiananmen Square.
