Shoot to thrill misses the main aim of armed forces
There is something bizarre about complaints from junior army officers that their men are not being exposed to sufficient danger and that morale is consequently low ("Ashamed to wear the uniform", May 27).
Rather than fanning the flames of this useless war, our officers should inculcate in their young charges that killing people, no matter the cause, is not fun, and that building schools and hospitals and getting to know those innocent civilians among the "enemy" who play no part in the destruction of their country is far more important.
Australian soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan have gained much respect among the civilian populations not by shooting at them but by helping them.

From Jonathan Pearlman's story you would get the idea that soldiers are not happy unless they are killing people. Maybe we should just bring them home and forget about peacekeeping and rebuilding.

Actually it is very simple they are not happy units like 2 CAV. based in Darwin are doing overseas deployments on a rotating basis and picking up, overseas deployment money. Whereas the infantry which is not actually equiped for Iraq and Afghanistan are not going overseas.
There would be very few Darwin based soldiers that havent done a tour in either Afghanistan,Iraq or Timor usually for six months and I know that the Majority have been to all three.
