I don't see the tech dept. here anymore, so I'll ask here. I have spent the last 6 months getting used to Windows 7 and for the most part, I like it. It's pretty much an upgraded XP, so the user interface is alot like XP, making the whole program pretty easy to figure out.
But now, how about 8? I need to know what people thing of it, that have it. A buddy of mine is buying a new laptop today and I'm taking him shopping, to help him get a decent pc. He is very limited with computer skills, and I have heard there is a long learning curve to the new Windows 8.
The laptop he wants is on sale, but, it has Windows 8 installed. I have heard that the Metro user interface is not so user friendly, and the touch screen takes getting used to. I know I would never have fingers on my monitor and see no reason for this supposed "upgrade" from Windows. I've read that Windows 8 was made primarly for tablet users and not so much for laptops.
So, I know he's going to need my help getting going on his new pc, but I have no idea on 8. I'm going to suggest sticking with 7 for now. Let Windows get the kinks ironed out and allow people time to see the good and bad points about this one. So far, it's getting mixed reviews. How about you? Have you tried it yet?

In my opinion Windows 8 is more for tablets and ipads. I wont be upgrading. Probably miss this upgrade and wait for Windows 9 or 10.

The MOTH's replacement laptop after the burglary was shipped with Windows 8 - he previously had 7. Hates it, and so do I but I only have to learn it enough to help him. Dont go there if you dont have to!!
Having said that, you tube can be helpful as well as some forums in working out how the stupid tiles work. Once you get rid of the crap they ship with it that is sitting on the front page, it starts to make more sense.
The MOTH has an iPad and an iPhone so he loves the ease of mac but his business software is Windows so he's stuck with that for his laptop.

Thanks folks for all the good info. It seems to be a pretty even split on like and dislike with 8. It wasn't that bad when 7 came out. Many people still prefer XP, and it's a good system. The only reason I bought 7 was to be able to use all 8 gigs of the new ram I put in. It takes 64 bit to run that much and XP can only run 3.5 gigs of ram, as it's 32 bit. I play adventure/action games and all the new ones are real resource hogs. They demand alot of high specs and gear to run. But, it does make a real difference in performance and the quality of the video.
So, I took my computer challenged friend laptop shopping at Bestbuy, Saturday. I told the sales guy we wanted the HP laptop they had, with Windows 7 in it. The guy starts saying we don't have anything like that and everything now has Windows 8, and I said "no, you have it online". So, he tries really hard to talk my friend into getting the newer one with 8. I said No. The guy kept pushing Windows 8! I said, "look, he don't want 8, ok"! I told him that I was going to be showing him the basics on the new pc and setting it all up for him. I would be charging it up and doing a system backup, which takes forever and about 8 blank dvds. So, I said if he got Windows 8, he was on his own, as I know nothing about 8. If he wanted 8, with his lack of knowhow with all systems, it would be a year or so before he would be surfing the net. So, he goes with 7.
But, because the salesman makes his big commision from the newer models, he's pushing 8. Finally, after seeing we won't budge, he somehow finally finds the one with Windows 7! Gee, wonder why it took so long? I'll tell ya why. It was on sale for only $235.00!! That's about $100.00 less then the normal price. I looked them up when I got home. So, my friend got a great deal. It has dual core with 4 gigs of ram and 350 gig hd. And, the sales guy probably made nothing in commison. O well. So, we ordered it and will pick it up Thursday. Now is a great time to find deals on laptops with Windows 7. And from what I've read, people are wishing they had not gone with 8. Gamers really hate it for some reason. I'll stick with 7. The one I have is still new, and it was not cheap. I actually paid more for my new graphics card then my friend just did for his whole new computer! Pays to shop around.

In all my experience with computers, Windows XP is by far my favourite operating system. That being said however, I'll be moving to Windows 8 as soon as I've saved enough for a new laptop.
Windows 8 is touch-screen friendly. Touch-screen technology is becoming incorporated into more and more devices, and that means more people are going to be producing software that utilises touch-screens. If people remain with Windows XP and 7 then they will be missing out on a vast amount of new software, especially when considering the new Windows App Store.
Also, I'm not certain Epi, but I read somewhere that Microsoft may not make Windows 9 and Windows 10. I believe they are simply going to perform 'upgrades' every 6 or 12 months, much like OSX and Android. The next Windows I believe will be an upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows Blue.
