A MAN whose car collided with a police vehicle was shot dead by STAR Group officers in Forestville last night.
Resident Darryl Mell , who lives opposite the shooting scene, gave a dramatic account of the incident which unfolded outside his home at 9.30pm.
"I was sitting in my lounge room and heard the (police) four wheel drive run into another car and I came running out just in time to see the bloke get out of the silver car and run into the yard of the house," he said.
"The STAR Group (officers) jumped out of the 4WD and went after him. I heard a lot of yelling. People yelling `get down, get down!' Then I heard bang, bang and the place was just full of cops within seconds."
The shooting was on Norman Tce, between Leah Street and First Ave.
Police sealed off streets in the area immediately after the shooting.
The police helicopter circled the area and officers in bulletproof vests stood guard over several streets that were sealed off.
At midnight, Assistant Commissioner Bronwyn Killmier announced that a man had died.
"A male person has died here tonight as a result of a police shooting," she said.
"There will be an inquiry into this matter. Police are expected to remain in the area for some time to investigate. That will result in some delays to traffic. Motorists are advised to stay away from the area if possible.
"It's regretful for everyone, for the person who's been killed, and for the police involved."
It is not known if the man was being pursued by police or if he was a suspect in a crime.
Deputy Commissioner Gary Burns will hold a press conference at police headquarters at 9am.
Earlier, at 9.45pm, police said there was no immediate danger to residents.
A Commissioner's Inquiry is expected to be held into the incident.
