Private Timothy Aplin funeral
Private Timothy James Aplin was farewelled today at Brisbane’s St. John’s Cathedral.
Thirty eight year old Private Aplin was serving with the Special Operations Task Group when he tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash, on Monday 21 June 2010.
Family, fellow commandos and dignitaries attended the morning service.
Private Aplin was described as an experienced Commando who distinguished himself while on operations.
“Tim’s concern as a soldier was to be nothing less than one of the selected few, which we can only describe as ‘Australia’s finest,” Chaplain Maumau Mono said during the service.
Mr Michael Kruger paid tribute to Private Aplin on behalf of friends and family.
“Duty makes us do things well, love makes us do it to perfection,” Mr Kruger said.
“Tim loved his kids, he was a perfect father.”
The Hon Julia Gillard MP, Prime Minister; Senator the Hon John Faulkner, Minister for Defence; the Hon Tony Abbott MP, Leader of the Opposition; Senator the Hon David Johnston, Shadow Minister for Defence; the Hon Anna Bligh MLA, Premier of Queensland; Dr Ian Watt, Secretary for Defence; Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston AC AFC, Chief of the Defence Force; Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie AO DSC CSM, Chief of Army; and Major General Tim McOwan DSC CSM, Special Operations Commander Australia attended the funeral.
PTE Aplin has been awarded the Australian Active Service Medal with East Timor, Iraq and ICAT clasps, the Infantry Combat Badge, United Nations Medal with Ribbon UNTAET, the IRAQ Campaign Medal, the Australian Defence Medal, the Defence Long Service Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal. PTE Aplin has also been awarded the Returned from Active Service Badge from a previous deployment.
