I don't know how it's done in other countries, but here on the West Coast of the US, the Internet providers are starting to abuse their power. They pretty much have a monopoly on internet service going. There is only a few choices, of ways to access the internet here. You can get dsl through the phone company, or you can pay more, and get cable through the local tv cable company. Here it's called Comcast. Now, you can also get internet with satellite, but it's bad service and cost alot more. It's basically for people that live way out in the country and don't have access to the other two.
So, the choice is basically two, and that's it. And, now they are both messing with the speed of the service they sell. The faster you want to go, the more you pay, but they are not delivering the stated speed. If you buy the 12 mbps (mega byte per second download speed), you end up with maybe 9 or 10. If you get the 20 mbps, and run a speed test, your going to see about 15 mbps. And on and on. And many people are mad. The company says it's your computer or your trying to test the speed during the busiest hours, which is 5pm-11pm. That's bs. Their stealing money from people and trying to keep the bandwidth clear. They think they need to monitor the bandwidth of people and this is invasion of privacy. Another invasion their doing is rotten and it's getting people quitting and/or kicked off their internet.
Because Hollywood is doing so much complaining about people sharing their music and movies online, they have been putting constant pressure on these internet providers to make them monitor their clients downloads to see if their downloading any file shareing files. They can't stop it, and people that own these movies have every right to share them imo. According to the big shots in Hollywood, they say it's illegal for you to give a movie to another person or give away music that you own. Now, the way I see it is if I own it, I can do wtf I want to do with it. If sharing is illegal, then we need to close down all librarys NOW! The whole idea behind a library is to share reading material with others, and this is the exact same thing as online file sharing.
So, the pressure that Hollywood is putting on the internet providers is growing, and the way the isps are keeping themselves out of the coutroom is to do random viewing of what their customers are downloading. I think this is illegal as hell. What happened to privacy? If they see you downloading from a file sharing site, they will send you a notice telling you to stop. If you get 5 of these notices and still don't stop, then they do what's called "throttling" This means they slow your internet speed down to dial-up speed! Remember that? It would take you two weeks to download any movie with that speed.
Well, if you still don't stop, they will cut you off. Then you have to go get the cable, which cost more. And the cable company has their own bag of tricks. They have stated they will not be pressured by Hollywood to go after people, but they do regulate the speed anyway. They slow it down sometimes for no reason. This game is making alot of customers real angry and I really hope that sometime soon we will all have more options on this service. Just as tv only gave us very few channel options when it was new, I think in the near future we will have many, many choices on internet service and these guys will be forced to lower their ubsurd rates.
By the way, there is a way to surf the net and nobody can tell where you are or what your downloading. It's free, and I use it all the time. I will post the link here. There's no reason for any service provider to monitor anyone's browing activity or downloads, but they do, but we have ways around it. When I'm downloading a file from some "friend" who's nice enough to share it with me, I turn on this software, wait 2 minutes, and when the little light turns green, I am "invisible"-
If the internet provider looks at my computer they will see me downloading something from Spain one minute, then England the next, then maybe Australia 30 seconds later! hahahaha-my surfing is bounced all over the world from one server to another. I'm going all over the world in minutes without ever leaving home! Very cool.
To surf the web anonymously, use i2p network. It's free, a small program that makes your online business private. I love downloading Disney games and movies for my grandaughter, and this keeps me from getting in trouble with the greedy morons in Hollywood. If you want to learn how, I'll be glad to show you step by step how to access free music and movies. I should probably do it one on one via email. Let me know if your interested in knowing how. Glad to help. I think sharing is caring and we should keep it alive and well.
