Yesterday I made some stuffed cabbage leaves. I used this recipe as a guide - comments below.
12 lg. cabbage leaves
2 cups (1 lb.) ground beef
2 cups (1/2 inch) soft bread crumbs
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/4 tsp. garlic salt
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 eggs
1 can condensed cream of tomato soup
Parboil cabbage leaves for 5 minutes. Combine beef, soft bread cubes, salt, pepper, garlic salt, onion and eggs. Form meat mixture into 12 oblong patties. Place a meat patty on each of the cabbage leaves. Roll up in cabbage leaf, and fasten leaves to meat with toothpicks. Place stuffed cabbage leaves into skillet. Pour undiluted tomato soup over them. Cover and cook at low heat for 45 minutes.
Comments & Suggestions
Quite nice, but the meat mixture was a little bland. Use herbs like chili flakes, mace etc and could even stand a little cheese in the meat mixture - whatever herbs you like with mince meat.
I used Heinz Spicy Tomato Soup - no water added. The spicy sauce was good.
You could substitute the bread with rice.
Be careful with the soup when it's boiling as it is thick and tends to spit up large hot bubbles. Keep the lid on as much as possible.
I made half the meat mixture with five cabbage leaves.
I would only parboil the cabbage leaves for 4 minutes next time. You need a large saucepan to cook these leaves.
If you are having this for a main meal without anything else then one is not enough but two is far too much.
I cooked this in an electric skillet although it could have been cooked in the saucepan or the oven.
I will be cooking it again but with some modifications.
